One-Page Strategic Plan Template

A one-page strategic plan keeps direction visible between quarterly reviews. Directors stop digging through slide decks to answer what matters this year, and functional leads can link their work to priorities without a six-month planning programme.

This template is built for growing UK small businesses: ten to eighty people, leadership teams that meet weekly or monthly, and strategy that must stay practical enough to execute while the business runs.

Connect the plan to measurable execution with strategy vs OKRs vs KPIs and our strategic direction tools once the one-pager is agreed.

What belongs on one page (and what does not)

One page means one page, not font size six. Include:

  • Where we are going (direction, three to five years)
  • What must be true this year (annual priorities)
  • What we will prove this quarter (quarterly outcomes)
  • How we measure health (a small KPI set)
  • Who owns each priority at leadership level

Exclude: exhaustive market analysis, thirty-slide competitor reviews, and departmental project lists. Those belong in appendices or functional plans, not on the one-pager directors review monthly.

One-page strategic plan template

1. Purpose and direction (2–3 sentences)
Why the company exists and where it is heading. Example: "We help mid-market manufacturers reduce downtime through predictive maintenance. We aim to be the default partner for UK plants with 50–200 assets by 2028."

2. Strategic choices (3 bullets max)
What we will do and explicitly what we will not do. Example: focus on UK mid-market, product-led growth, partner channel in Scotland only.

3. Annual priorities (3 items)
Outcomes that define a successful year. Each should be testable by 31 December.

4. This quarter's focus (2–3 outcomes)
Bridge to OKRs. These become company objectives or key results in your OKR system.

5. KPI dashboard (5–7 metrics)
Lagging and leading indicators leadership reviews monthly. Tie to live data where possible.

6. Risks and assumptions (3 bullets)
What could break the plan; what must stay true for priorities to work.

7. Named owners
One executive sponsor per annual priority and quarterly outcome.

How to run the planning session (half day)

Morning (3 hours):

  1. Review last year's outcomes and current KPI baseline (45 min)
  2. Agree direction and strategic choices (45 min)
  3. Draft annual priorities with owners (60 min)
  4. Break

Afternoon (2 hours):

  1. Translate annual priorities into this quarter's focus (45 min)
  2. Confirm KPI set and data sources (45 min)
  3. Document risks and publish the one-pager (30 min)

End with a dated PDF or live page in your execution system, not a workshop flip chart that nobody sees again.

Linking the one-pager to OKRs and KPIs

The one-pager is the anchor. OKRs operationalise the quarter. KPIs monitor health while OKRs pursue change.

Example flow:

  • Annual priority: "Grow recurring revenue from existing clients"
  • Quarterly OKR objective: "Expand wallet share in top twenty accounts"
  • Key results: expansion revenue, retention rate, NPS in target accounts
  • KPIs: MRR, churn, gross margin (reviewed monthly)

Read how to set OKRs and how to set KPIs when you move from plan to execution.

Keeping the plan alive between quarters

Review the one-pager in monthly management meetings and refresh quarterly focus every quarter. Annual priorities should change at most once mid-year unless the market forces a pivot.

Signs the plan is stale:

  • Functional leads cannot link work to annual priorities
  • KPIs on the page are never updated from live systems
  • Quarterly focus was copied from last year with new dates
  • Owners changed but the page still lists departed executives

Assign one director as plan custodian. Their job is version control and review cadence, not owning every outcome.

Common one-page plan mistakes

  • Listing every project instead of outcomes
  • Using jargon that frontline managers cannot translate
  • No named owners, so priorities become "the leadership team"
  • KPIs that nobody can pull without a manual export
  • Creating the plan once and hiding it in a shared drive

Pair the plan with a quarterly business review agenda so direction reconnects to decisions every ninety days.

When the business outgrows one page

Above roughly one hundred people or multiple divisions, you may add a one-pager per division while keeping a company one-pager for cross-cutting priorities. The company page should still fit on one screen.

Software helps when the plan, OKRs, and KPIs live in one place directors already use. Strategic planning use case shows how teams keep direction visible without enterprise programme overhead.
